What We Are Working On
:: Muskosiy House
Biohome Developments has partnered with Edmonton’s Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society (Bent Arrow) to build one of the first 3-story, straw-insulated buildings in North America. The innovative building will serve as an affordable housing complex comprised of 2 and 3-bedroom townhouses for low-income urban Aboriginal families. The building will be called Muskosiy “straw” House to reflect the use of a structurally insulated panels (SIPs) made from Alberta Oriented Strand Board (OSB) and Alberta-grown straw. Using Alberta-made straw SIPs will reduce energy costs to operate the building by 50%, offer a more healthy and environmentally sound choice for insulation, and will significantly reduce the project’s carbon footprint.
Other partners on the project to date include Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, EVMPA Architecture, StackIT Wall Systems Inc., The Alberta Green Building Council, Alberta Employment & Immigration, and Alberta Innovates Technology Futures. The vision for the project is to lead by example so that Edmonton becomes a leader in providing affordable housing that is culturally relevant, and environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable.
